Would love to have been a professional athlete but I had an injury which prevented me going any further. I guess the other career I thought about was teaching

I’m not a clinician but I’ve often wondered what it would have been like if I’d become a nurse

ha, no. and the reason why is this is the second career I have had. when I left school I worked in a pub, worked for River Island. I then went to University when my son was little. I became a university lecturer, and then I have left that job to train as a paramedic. So what I would say is there are lots of different things you can do with your working life, and you don’t have to stay at one thing that you might pick when you are 16 or 18. Go with what you enjoy and are passionate about, and if that stops, change direction…….

When I was in university I wanted to be a psychologist, but at the time that took a lot of unpaid internships and because my family lived rurally I couldn’t live with them and work for free, so I gave up on that. I sometimes wonder if I would have been good at being a psychologist and helping people more directly than my management role. And I did the NHS graduate management scheme – many of my friends from that took a more traditional route into hospital management and are doing very well, and sometimes I am jealous of the status and impact they can have. I don’t have the big job title and seniority they have, but I do have a great lifestyle, and I see more of my family and friends than I could have working the hours that were expected in that setting. Ultimately, I think things have worked out very well for me!

Nursing is so varied you can do almost anything once you have the qualification. Education, working aborad, general practice, hospitals, community – spealist, do research, leadership, drugs reps. Specialise become an advanced care practitioner. Many nurses are not doing the role they started out on and more and more roles pop up as there are needs.
